2014 A huge year for the little button co!

2014-what an amazing year it has been for the little button co!

It’s very easy to keep your head down working away and not stop to see what has changed over the last year-so here I am on a rare day off looking back at what has happened over the last year to my little business, hope you enjoy reading-as i’ve certainly enjoyed the journey this year!

Back in January my little business was still being run from my kitchen table. The house had been taken over by boxes of stock and a lot of fabric (fabric lovers will understand how easy it is to get out of control on that front!) so I took the very big and scary step of moving the business from my kitchen table into its very own workshop. Work began turning the neglected space into a cosy and welcoming place to create and sell all our lovely products.

By March the Ossett shop was ready to open-it was a very exciting time, for the first time having an area to display all my handmade products! By this stage I was struggling to keep up with production of everything and was very lucky to meet our machinist, Lesley, the workshop was now well and truly in full swing and such a fantastic place to go to work everyday.

In April we had a stand at our first trade show, The British Craft Trade Show, being surrounded by so many talented people was quite daunting, but we had an amazing response to our products and our signature Yorkshire Collection is now stocked in 15 farm and independent shops across Yorkshire.

June was another big month for the little button co, we got the keys for our second shop in the Grand Arcade in Leeds city centre. Having started the year at my kitchen table taking on my second shop was another huge leap-but one I was very keen to take. Work began decorating the new shop (the glamorous painting clothes were out again!) and within two weeks we were ready to open. We have had an amazing response to the shop opening and was very lucky to work our very lovely shop manager Jil, who we have also worked with to design some exclusive products for the shop.

I’m sure its not just me that will remember July for the Grand de part! Yorkshire was transformed into the most beautiful race track in the world and I think all Yorkshire folk were very proud to be a part of it. The race set off from the Headrow in Leeds-just a few hundred metres from the Leeds shop-the arcade was the busiest I have ever seen it, filled with a unique atmosphere it will be a day I will remember for years to come.

October was an exciting month, we won the Theo Pathitis Small Business Sunday award. Our twitter following has steadily grown over the past year and this gave us a huge boost. In January I get to meet Theo and receive our certificate for the win, sure it will be a real pinch yourself moment!

November saw the launch of our first christmas collection-of course it featured a Yorkshire theme! Customers were looking in the shop window chuckling away to themselves at the Ey Up Santa and ‘Ow Do Rudolph baubles which sold out within two weeks! Luckily our potter was very understanding and worked through the night to get us some more handmade in time for the festive period.

December is always a busy time for us-and this year was no exception. We’ve had our busiest month to date and wasn’t expecting it to be quite as big as it was! When you have worked all 7 days in the week and realise there is none left you start to panic a bit but I am very lucky to have the help of my very supportive family who without i’m not sure how I would have coped. I do remember one night when me, hubby and dad were all making lampshades at the workshop till very late.

And here we are, at the end of an amazing 2014, I do feel like I am on a journey-there are highs and lows and lots of hard work but I really do love what I do so much.

And so I get a bit teary eyed as I say a big thank you to all you lovely customers who support us small businesses, without you none of this would have been possible and hope so much that you can join us again in 2015-we have so much planned!
